Chaffin Farms is committed to producing the highest quality agricultural products while minimizing environmental impact. We provide a good working environment and carefully preserve and protect our capital and land, with the goal of enabling future family generations to continue and expand the farming operation.
Integrated Pest Management
When invasive pests are present, Chaffin Farms first relies on natural predators as the first line of defense. When beneficial insects can no longer maintain the natural balance, chemical options are discussed, with many products used at Chaffin Farms certified for use in Organic Markets.
A Thoughtful Approach to Farming
At Chaffin Farms, the philosophy that sometimes “less is better” guides the family’s approach to crop production. Each crop is carefully inspected by a licensed Pest Control Advisor and Certified Crop Advisor to identify invasive weeds and pests while emphasizing natural crop production.
Irrigation Management
Chaffin Farms also takes a measured approach to irrigation management. In 2002, the farm entered into a joint venture with California Irrigation Management Information Systems (CIMIS) to provide a solar-powered irrigation management system. CIMIS installed a weather station (Ripley #151) in a Chaffin Farms field, capable of transmitting weather and irrigation information used to determine the optimum duration between irrigations.
The CIMIS station provides critical irrigation inputs, including evapotranspiration, soil temperature at a depth of six inches, air temperature, and wind speed. In 2006, Chaffin Farms entered into another joint venture with the Palo Verde Irrigation District to update an irrigation check station on a major irrigation canal.
The project replaced the older manual check gate with a solar-powered, telemetry-operated irrigation check station. This allows the PVID water master to monitor and regulate canal flows and adapt to changes in demand at a moment’s notice.
Automated Surface Irrigation
The Rubicon Water Surface Irrigation Automation Solution is a technology platform designed to modernize traditional gravity-fed surface and flood irrigation by automating on-farm water delivery and achieving application efficiencies of 85% to 95%.
